Apparently some local writer in Charlotte wrote an article trashing the Stanley Cup the Playoffs, the NHL, the Hurricanes etc… I would have probably ignored it but a couple of days later he wrote an article about how alive and well the world cup is …. you know I don t like soccer much but pretty much any sport that people love is cool with me, but trash hockey and applaud the world cup in the same month? This guy shouldn’t be allowed to write a sports column, at least not in the US. Any person of intelligence that is a fan of sports cannot have anything but a tremendous amount of respect for hockey players and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.. it is simply THE toughest professional Sports Championship to obtain.

I’ve exchanged 3 emails with the boys at the charlotte observer… They all claim its an opinion peice. I say its ill-will and bad faith. Keep your eyes open to see if they try it again. The Canes are approach 10 years (subtract one if you include the lockout) in NC. Its time to show some respect…. and hey, if Charlotte is so down on hockey, then why have the Checkers been their 12+ years, owned by a NASCAR guy, who is a partner with the Bobcats…

I talked to a friend in charlotte he said most people he knew were pretty into it… not like they are the panthers of course but the real sports fans in charlotte were excited. He also said Sorenson is a Jackass.
We moved from Raleigh to Charlotte last July. Fortunately FSN carried 60+ Huricanes games and OLN was on our cable.
The Charlotte Observer, until the NBA regular season was thankfully over, carried the AP wire stories and an occasional picture. You have to remember this is the newspaper that pulled for Jordan’s Bulls the last time they played the Hornets in the playoffs. My sons, all big Panther fans, complain about the constant repetition of story lines in the Observer’s coverage. (Not to be left out, the N&O doesn’t cover any sports east of Hillsborough except WF basketball.)
I grew up in Charlotte watching the Checkers play so there are many Charlotteans that love and appreciate hockey. My colleagues at work were well aware I was a Caniac and many of them followed the Canes through the playoffs.
The true Charlotte sports fans appreciate the dedication and effort it takes to win a championship.
Basically, Sorenson is a carpetbagger from Minnesota (apparently the State of Hockey had sense enough to run him out) trying to make North Carolinians look like complete moonshining, tobacco spitting rednecks by saying a Rick Flair wrestling “champuionship” is more important to the state.
